ReWriting Captured Lies

Maggie Thom, Award Winning Author, Speaker, Writing Coach

It was the Hardest but the Best Decision Ever

There was a time when Captured Lies was a completely different book.

Fourteen years later, I can honestly say that rewriting it was one of the biggest turning points in my writing career. It was the moment I stopped trying to write what I thought publishing expected — and started writing the kind of suspense stories I truly loved to read.

It Was Good But… Something Was Missing.

When I first wrote Captured Lies, it was a romance set in a fictional location. I loved the story and the characters, but deep down I knew something wasn’t quite right. The manuscript sat untouched for years while I tried to figure out what to do with it.

At the time, I believed romance was the path into publishing because many of the authors I admired had started there. But the truth was simple: I was a suspense reader at heart. Twists, danger, emotional stakes, those were the stories that stayed with me long after I finished the last page.

Eventually, I realized the problem wasn’t the story itself. It was that I wasn’t writing in my own voice.

Tearing It Apart — and Starting Again

Making the decision to rewrite the book felt overwhelming. I had invested so much time into the original version that the thought of dismantling it was intimidating.

But I wanted more from the story. I wanted tension, unpredictability, and characters forced into impossible choices.

So I printed the manuscript and began working through it page by page. I scribbled notes in the margins, crossed out entire scenes, and rewrote sections that no longer fit the direction I wanted to go.

The core idea of a kidnapped baby and a woman searching for answers about her past, stayed. Everything else evolved.

The villains became darker. The stakes grew higher. The romance shifted into the background, becoming just one layer within a much larger suspense-driven story.

And slowly, Captured Lies transformed into the thriller it was always meant to be.

Finding My Own Voice

One of the biggest lessons I learned during that rewrite was that comparison can hold you back.

I used to think, “I’m not an author like… Sandra Brown… Nora Roberts… Robert Ludlum…”

Now I see that as a gift. I wasn’t supposed to write like anyone else. I needed to find my own rhythm — one built around layered characters, multiple points of view, and emotional tension that keeps readers guessing.

Rewriting the book wasn’t just about changing genre. It was about becoming the writer I was meant to be.

What Rewriting Taught Me

Looking back, the process gave me insights that still shape how I write today:

  • You don’t have to keep a story locked in the genre where it started.
  • Growth as a writer often means revisiting older work with new eyes.
  • Voice matters more than trends or expectations.
  • Rewriting isn’t failure — it’s evolution.

Every pass through the manuscript made it stronger. Every change pushed the story closer to the suspense-driven style that would eventually define my books.

Looking Back Now

Years later, Captured Lies still represents a pivotal moment in my journey as an indie suspense author. It was the first time I truly trusted my instincts instead of trying to follow a path that didn’t feel authentic.

If you’re an author sitting on a manuscript that doesn’t quite fit, maybe it doesn’t need to be abandoned. Maybe it just needs to be reimagined.

Sometimes the story you’re meant to tell is already there… waiting for you to rewrite it into what it was always meant to be.
