He saved you.
Jill couldn’t deny that but she also didn’t want to blindly trust again. The last time hadn’t turned out so well. And since this guy was related to the other guy who had put her life in danger, she was wondering where her head was at but that didn’t stop her from following him.
The drive seemed to go on forever but that could have been because she was constantly looking out the side windows and out the rearview mirror. No one was following them that she could tell.
It was dark when they pulled down a long laneway that seemed to go on forever. The trees that lined the road cast shadows giving the feeling of visiting a gravesite at midnight. An animal darted out of the bushes. Jill slammed on the brakes, with a grip on the steering wheel that could have ripped it from its encasement. Sitting there for a moment, with her heart racing and her breathing shallow, she watched the white tail of the deer disappear into the night.
Brad’s taillights disappeared. Creeping forward, she made her way to where she’d last seen him. The path took a sharp left. She followed it, but the minute she cleared the trees, she stomped on the brakes.
“What the hell?”
She had misplaced her trust. One hand slid to the gear shift, while her other hand went up to shield her eyes. Powerful lights were glaring at her. They were blinding but she could make out the silhouette of a man with his hands in the air and another man holding a long-barreled gun. She shoved the car in reverse but that was enough to draw the man’s attention and his gun. It was now pointed right at her.
She debated about taking a chance and leaving. But the cocking of the gun told her she’d taken too long.
“No!” Brad stepped between the man and her.
She could leave. Her gut clenched. The thought of Brad meeting a fate similar to his brother’s didn’t sit well.
The man fired the gun over their heads. Jill immediately ducked, although if he’d aimed at her it would have been already to late. He meant business.
She shut off the car and slowly got out making sure to put her hands in the air as she did so. If he thought she was going to make this easy to dispose of them, though, he was mistaken.
