If Captured Lies were a Movie, Who Should Play Lund?

Maggie Thom, Multi-Award Winning Author, Speaker, Writing Coach

Captured Lies is book 1 in The Caspian Wine Series. Maybe because Captured Lies was the first book I published or maybe because I just like the story and the characters, it is one of my favorites. I know you’re not supposed to have favorites when you write them but I do.

Although this was close, only one vote difference, the choice was Ben Kingsley.

Who is Robert Lund?

If you’ve read Captured Lies, you know that Lund is one of the bad characters. He grew up wealthy but then married into the super rich. And to top that off he made his own very wealthy bank account but not from his job as a defense attorney but from the blackmailing of politicians, CEO’s, judges, doctors, etc. And if anyone got in his way or tried to out him, he had them killed. Definitely a dark character.

Some key things about Lund: he’s 65, about 5’10”, self absorbed, thinks he is untouchable and above the law.

Sounds like a great guy, right?

Can she untangle 30 years of secrets, lies and deceit?

She was kidnapped not once but twice…

and now someone wants her dead because of it…

Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing hadn’t been normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. She finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then her mom suddenly dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery  that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life was a lie. Growing up on the run has prepared Bailey for once again, fleeing to stay alive. Using the skills she learned on the street, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to uncover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story… but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? To discover the truth, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets dating back over thirty years.

Who should play Lund?

I can tell you that this was by far the most difficult. I have a vision of Lund but didn’t really find an actor that fit that vision physically but many of them could easily fill the role.

There are so many incredible actors in this age group. I hate to think of having to put someone into playing a dark role but I looked at actors that I felt people like in general and I’ve seen them play some roles that I felt suited this. I want Lund to be someone who thinks he is above everyone and answerable to no one. He is not likeable.

I chose about 6 actors and then I flipped a coin to see who to include. It was way too hard to choose. Both of these two actors, Michael Keaton and Ben Kingsley have played funny men, serious men and very dark men. I think they are both incredible actors with a lot of versatility.

“Captured Lies, the Movie.”

Please comment below and let me know which man you think would play Lund’s character the best? Ben Kingsley or Michael Keaton? Or have another suggestion?
